Paul's room began as a void. Not yet a listening room, just a corner of a newly refurbished house, painted white, colder than everywhere else it touched. What happened in it since is a version of a story many collectors will recognise: a room that had to learn how to hold what was asked of it.

An Empty Room, Painted WhiteUne pièce vide, peinte en blanc

When Paul and his family moved in, the house had already been through a full refurbishment. Every room had a mood to it, except this one. The space that would become the listening room was left painted white, and it felt like exactly that: an empty void, cold against the rest of the house. Nothing was wrong with it, structurally. It simply had not yet been asked to do anything.

That white did not last. Long after, the walls were given a warm coat of pale biscuit, to bring back some of the warmth the room had first lacked.

The First RecordLe premier disque

The first record Paul put on the turntable in the finished room was Speak No Evil, by Wayne Shorter. It reads less like a casual first choice than a statement, a way of telling a new room what kind of listening it would be asked to hold. Whatever the intention, the room has kept faith with it since.

A Sanctuary, Rarely SharedUn sanctuaire, rarement partagé

Someone else listens with Paul only rarely. The room, in his own words, is his sanctuary, a place he feels at peace. Music fills the air there, surrounds him, eases him toward what he calls a void of nothingness. He does not think, in the ordinary sense, once he is in the room. It is less a place for reflection than a place to be freed of the world outside it, if only for a while.

"Music fills the air, surrounds me, eases me and takes me to a void of nothingness.
I don't think in the listening room.
It's a wonderful space to free yourself of this world, if only for a short time."

The Rug That Changes EverythingLe tapis qui change tout

Ask Paul what matters in the room beyond the equipment, and he does not point to a speaker or a cable. He points to the shag pile rug underfoot. It has nothing to do with sound, in the sense that no engineer would ever spec it, but it optimises the room's acoustics all the same, and gives the whole space a warmth that opens it up completely. The one object in the room that changes everything while claiming to change nothing.

What Would Be Hardest to LoseCe qui serait le plus dur à perdre

Pressed to name the one piece he could not bear to lose, Paul does not hesitate. The Tannoy speakers. Now that he has them, he says, they would be impossible to give up. Delicious, in every way, is how he puts it, and the word says as much about the pleasure of owning them as it does about how they sound.

In the EveningLe soir

The room is most itself in the evening. There is never a right time to be there, Paul says, only ever the right choice to make it happen. He describes lying sprawled across the shag pile as the light goes, letting the room do its thing around him, no agenda beyond being there, whatever record happens to be turning.

What the Room Taught HimCe que la pièce lui a appris

Asked what the room has taught him about himself, Paul does not talk about music, not directly. He talks about the value of a time out, whatever form that takes for a given person. His days are otherwise full: running businesses, constant travel, the kids, and the everyday intrusion of technology that gives no one much peace. In the listening room, all of it falls away. Free of it all, he says, into a void of nothingness. Beautiful, in his own word.

There is nothing especially rare in the room, no obscure story behind how it came to be, only a slow accumulation: a coat of white paint given somewhere to end, a record that set a tone, a rug that changed the acoustics without meaning to, and speakers he can no longer picture living without. It adds up, in the end, to a room that knows exactly what it is for.
